The AGWs annual dinner was held last Tuesday night in the Claret Jug marquee at Royal Birkdale.

The AGW again welcomed official guests from all areas of golf administration including here in the UK and from Ireland, Europe, USA, Dubai, Asia, South Korea and South Africa.

We were joined by our vice-president, Gary Player along with our three award winners in Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose and Peter Dawson while Sergio Garcia thrilled everyone arriving wearing his Masters green jacket.

A number of other Royal Birkdale players attended including Ernie Els, Thomas Bjorn and last week’s Scottish Open winner, Rafa Cabrera Bello.

One of the first email thank you notes received clearly summed up the evening and it was from Mike Round at the Ladies European Tour.

“I’d like to thank you for allowing me to attend the Golf Writer’s Dinner to represent the LET and congratulations for its success. I had a very enjoyable evening.Iain Carter once again did a first class job and there was a wonderful atmosphere in the room.

It was great to see so many of the top players supporting the event and one of the highlights for me was Gary Player’s tribute to Arnold Palmer.

Thanks once again and I wish you well for the rest of the week.

With my sincerest best wishes,

-Mike

The meal was superb and the venue ideal overlooking the first fairway and capped just following the formal proceedings by a stunning sunset that had many guests venturing out of the room to capture the scene.

Of course, the success of the evening, and as Iain rightfully highlighted in his address, was in every way due to the work of David Hamilton, Bob Davies and Andy Farrell and the Association is indebted for their tireless efforts behind the scenes.

John Bowles has to be thanked in making the effort to have the trophies on hand even though he could not remain for the dinner.

As well, the AGW also extends our special thanks to the R & A in allowing the Claret Jug to be on hand that clearly delighted many guests who were photographed with the trophy.

And talking of trophies I am pleased to report the Golf Writers Trophy was still in the possession of the AGW and not among items stolen from Stenson’s rented house on Thursday.

A very special thank you also to Dave Cannon of Getty Images for the wonderful images from the evening.

We already now look forward to next year at Carnoustie and what will be the 80th anniversary of the Association.
