1938 – 2020

Dear AGW Members,

Greetings and trusting this will find members and their families well in these uncertain times.

I write this first newsletter in a couple of months and on a day nine years ago the golf world lost Seve Ballesteros.

Seve Ballesteros 1957 – 2011

There will be a few AGW members reading this who were present at the El Pratt Golf Club in Barcelona that week reporting on the Spanish Open when news came through Seve had passed away earlier on the Saturday morning – aged just 54.

The next morning ahead of the final round there was this remarkable sight of everyone involved with the tournament lined-up on the practice range as a mark of respect for Seve.

Jose Maria Olazabal and Miguel Angel Jimenez lead the tributes to Seve Ballesteros

The mainly Spanish crowd were hoping so much Pablo Larrazabal would deliver a nation in mourning victory but it was a very emotional Thomas Aiken securing success and then endearing himself to everyone in dedicating his maiden European Tour win to Seve.

The Association honoured Seve in 1979, 1984 and 1991 with the AGWs prestigious ‘Golfer of the Year’ award.

His relationship with members of the AGW has been vividly highlighted by so many members who singled out their own ‘Seve Story’ in the AGW ‘Memories’.

In speaking of the AGW ‘Memories’ members there is a handful of further contributions at the end of this Bulletin.

Also, members can go to the AGWs website to read all contributions by clicking on:   https://www.agwgolf.org/agw-members-memories/

AGW GOLF DAYS

The cancellation of The Open led to the cancellation also of the AGW outlining set down last month for Royal Cinque Ports.

While there is a continuing uncertainty it is hoped that if matters do get back to normal, and there are a few months remaining in the year, the AGW with Golf Captain Peter Dixon’s assistance will look at the possibility of ‘squeezing in’ a few of our AGW outings rather then simply wipe the year of any competition.

AGW ANNUAL DINNER & OTHER ISSUES

There have been a few emails enquiring about hosting of the AGWs annual dinner along other matters and all I can advise is that the AGW Committee will hopefully get the chance somehow to discuss these in coming weeks.

AGW 2020 MEMBER HANDBOOKS

The final version of the 2020 AGW Members handbook was a little late getting to the printers as we sought to confirm a new handbook sponsor and as it turned out, it’s now been delayed as the printer is in lockdown.

Robin Barwick advises as soon as the printers get the green light they can return to work then the handbooks should soon thereafter be available to forward to all members.

PICK YOUR PRO

For those who entered the 2020 Pick Your Pro it’s also too early to know what will transpire with regards postponed and rescheduled events though Mark Garrod has kindly agreed to stay on board to try and keep a handle on matters.

2020 MASTERS – Accreditation

Augusta National has advised that all those who were approved for media accreditation WILL NOT have to reapply for the rescheduled hosting in November.
