There was plenty to play for at Wentworth this week when 20 members of the AGW met for the final event of the season – the Golf Writers’ Championship. for the Fred Pignon Trophy. There was also the tournament within a tournament to decide who was to be our Champion Golfer of the Year. Congratulations to Jeremy Chapman, who made light work of the fabulous East Course to win the Fred Pignon Trophy with an outstanding score of 39 Stableford points. Colin Harding finished runner-up with 37 points, with Adrian Milledge coming in third on 36 points. Much of the interest focused on a head-to- head between Derek Lawrenson and David Facey, who were lying first and second in the ‘Race to Wentworth’ and too far ahead to be caught by anyone else in the field. Derek led David by four points before the start of play and managed to maintain his lead throughout. With 30 points to David’s 24, the victory in the end was a comfortable one. Well played Derek! Together with the Golfer of the Year Trophy, Derek scooped a splendid ETIQUS watch, donated by company owner Gary Butler, who joined us on the day, and a superb case of red wine, courtesy of Stephen Gibson, CEO of Wentworth.   *Brian Creighton reports: I played with Dick Turner and Jeremy Chapman, who turned up at the last minute, having gone to the first tee of the Edinburgh only to find there was nobody there. He said he hadn’t  played in months because golf bores him now and he’d rather play table tennis. He hit three shots onto the first green and then rolled in a 25-foot putt for par. By the third hole he was coughing and holding his jaw, a legacy of the cancer he had a few years ago which he says bothers him when he is outside. We wondered if he would make it to the 6th. He did, then said he felt six holes was enough and perhaps he should walk in. He didn’t and there he was at the 7th, the long par three over the hedge, where he made par with another good putt. He must have holed five putts of over 25  feet. At the par three 12th he hit his tee shot straight at the flag, six feet short, and made the putt for a birdie 2. He played well coming in and finished with 39 points. Then he said how the golf he played and the putts he made were beyond his wildest dreams. Not bad for someone who turned up almost late saying how golf bored him and he’d rather play ping pong. Well done, Jeremy!
