Report by AGW Golf Captain, Peter Dixon..

The final AGW golf event of the season proved a great success at Royal Porthcawl on Tuesday.  In stunning conditions, 15 players competed for the Golf Writers’ Championship Fred Pignon Trophy on a day when the sun shone brightly and the wind stayed away.

And in what proved to be a tournament within a tournament, Alistair Tait and Colin Callander took things down to the wire in their challenge to become the AGW’s Etiqus Golfer of the Year.

Playing off a handicap of seven, Colin Harding emerged a worthy winner of the Fred Pignon Trophy with an outstanding score of 36 points, made up of two equal halves of 18. Colin’s gross score of 79 was no mean feat on a course that is rightly regarded as one of the finest in the British Isles. In second place was Andy Farrell, with 35 points.  (See attached photo)

At the start of the day, Alistair Tait had 122 points and led Colin Callander by 31 points in the season-long standings. With the best four cards counting, Colin needed to score at least 32 points and hope that Alistair, who had played four events to his closest challenger’s three, did not better his lowest score of 27.

In the end, Colin came in with 31 points to his rival’s 27, which meant there were joint winners as player of the year. Very kindly, Etiqus CEO Gary Butler, who came along for the day, kindly donated a watch apiece as the first prize, rather than have the issue settled by the toss of a coin. (See attached photo)

It was also a day when the AGW paid tribute to revered colleague Peter Corrigan, a member of Royal Porthcawl, who passed away earlier this year.

A very special thanks to Gary Butler for his continuing generous support of the AGW as well as to Rupert Adams from William Hill for his financial contribution to the dinner.

The AGW is also extremely grateful to Michael Newlands, Secretary at Royal Porthcawl and the club in hosting the AGW.
