It was the AGWs enormous pleasure again to arrange for the despatch of the now famed AGW Christmas hampers to our ‘senior’ members along with those dear friends to the AGW during the recent 2022 Christmas Festive Season.

Once again, it is the thank you notes that continue to make the task all that worthwhile and with the AGW so much enjoying sharing your wonderful comments among all within the ranks of the Association.

And a special thanks to AGW Treasurer Peter Higgs in arranging.

Please, if I have not posted your thank you note advise me at: agwsecretary@gmail.com

NB – Thank you notes in order of receipt

SALLY & JOHN INGRAM

Once again I am writing on John’s behalf to thank you for remembering him at Christmas with the basket of goodies which, so far, we’ve resisted opening!
We celebrated his 90th in April. The three children and six grandchildren appreciate having such a funny, witty father and grandfather. The grandsons ranging in age from 14 – 27 call him John but Rosie,7,  the only girl, calls him grandpa John. None of them are golfers!!!
John’s dementia has caused him to be bedridden since a dose of covid struck back in July.  He is as alert as ever and full of stories from his lengthy past as a golf writer. Henry Longhurst, Peter Ryde and Leonard Crawley used to always call John, ‘golf writer’. They said he should start his columns, ‘ Harry Weetman, Ryder cup golfer,….’ instead of Ryder cup golfer Harry Weetman …..
We were talking about dear old friends such as Roger Wethered who invited Bing Crosby to play with John on their home course at RWGC. The younger members won’t have heard of either of them, I bet. But another friend from John’s early 20s was Peter Alliss, sadly missed by all.
If you are ever in need of confirmation of a golfing fact you should give us a ring. John can’t write now but he sure can talk. Sometimes stories are amazing but I never know if it’s old age or journalistic embellishment.  John snoozes a lot but is always very glad if friends show up or ring.
With many thanks and yours aye as Renton would have said

BRYAN POTTER

Bernie & Peter, thanks once again for very welcome Christmas goodie box – an annual reminder of the good days as active member.   Thanks you too, Bernie for the comprehensive newsletter that keeps we oldies in the picture.
With the “big one” (90) looming next year my active golf is now well behind me.,
But Shirley and I enjoy a comfortable, if quiet life in our Bury apartment.
We send our best seasonal greeting to you both and all member for good Xmas and healthy and rewarding New Year.

PATRICIA OAKLEY

I would like to thank the golf writers for the lovely Christmas hamper my mother Patricia Oakley has received. She is now 90 and really appreciates these kind of things, particularly the small bottle of prosecco and the breakfast tea, two favourites of hers. Thank you so much again – and best wishes to everyone at the association.

PETER HASLAM

Once again, Christmas has been enhanced by the gift of festive goodies from the members of the AGW. I am again struck by the thoughtfulness of my former colleagues. It is so nice to be and to feel remembered. Will you please pass on my thanks and my good  wishes to the officers and members. My health is faling to some extent but at the age of 88 i have known for a long time that the onset of age does not come alone.      But i am still here.   Best wishes to all,

Peter Haslam

JEREMY CHAPMAN

Yet another year survived, yet another AGW hamper delivered. You guys sure know how to make a chap feel ancient! Or loved!!
At pushing 82, the first one is a given, the second gives me a lovely warm feeling of camaraderie inside and makes me pine for those far-off days when I was regularly with you all and enjoying the best fellowship in the game that has provided us with not only a living but so very much more.
And what  lovely thought to make me a Life Member in the autumn. The gorgeous quaich has not been lying idle – those lucky enough to be able to eat chocolates know where to find them.
Still hoping to make an appearance at an AGW golf event off 39.2 in 2023 but they need to come south. Will Royal Mid Surrey ever have us back?
My best for Christmas and New Year to you all. And I’ve already ordered Lewine’s book!

BRIAN CREIGHTON

I want to express my thanks for the lovely Christmas hamper which arrived at our home down here in Dorset before Christmas. It was a joy and a huge compliment to receive it and Susie and I are extremely grateful for it, although she said it makes her feel old to have a husband elderly and eligible enough to be a recipient of the agw’s generosity. She – and to a lesser extent I – fell upon the contents voraciously and I must say that only three days after Christmas, there is not much left of the contents. It all went down very well, none more so than the mince pies which were scoffed quickly by the chaps I play bridge with at my golf club (Parkstone) on a Tuesday morning.

So, once again, my sincere gratitude to the AGW for their consideration and largesse towards this old fellow.

Many Thanks,

Brian.

DONALD STEEL

I received a Christmas hamper yesterday which gave no indication of the sender. If I am correct in assuming it was from the AGW, in recognition of the old timers, my very grateful thanks.

Happy Christmas.

Donald

ETHEL & COLIN FARQUARSON

Just received a lovely surprise in the form of a hamper. I really thought you would have to stop sending these out due to difficult circumstances we are in. I have not mentioned it to Colin so he will get a surprise on Christmas Day.

Hope you have time to relax and enjoy Christmas.

DAVE & YVONNE EDWARDS

A beautiful festive hamper which arrived here at Glassaugh today.

On behalf of Yvonne and myself, may we humbly thank members of the AGW for making such a generous and thoughtful gesture which really is greatly appreciated.

It has given Yvonne a great boost ahead of her scan results we are expecting just before Christmas – hopefully they will be  equally encouraging.

Wishing my fellow AGW members a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and above all, a healthy New Year.

Best regards,

Dave & Yvonne

JENNIFER LAIDLAW

I just want to thank the AGW for the lovely Christmas Hamper that arrived today.    It was a lovely surprise and very much appreciated.

I would like to wish all members a very Happy Christmas and a successful 2023.

With Kindest regards,

Jennifer Laidlaw

MIKE BLAIR

The Christmas goodies just arrived. Much appreciated and please thank the chap who sent it. Have a great Christmas.

Mike

JUDY WILLIAMS

Once again I must thank the AGW for remembering Michael and sending me a Christmas Hamper.    It is 25 years since Michael left us whilst playing golf at his home course of Chelmsford, with our son, Roddy, and it is very special to me and our  family to still have a connection with  several dear friends in the Association.     All the family were at home this year for Christmas and your Hamper was very much appreciated. It may interest some of you to know that following Michael, who was Captain of Chelmsford twice, myself as lady captain, and Roddy as Cadet captain 30 odd years ago,   our eldest daughter, Caroline, has just completed her year as Lady Captain.    Not bad for one family and Michael’s legacy.

It has been a difficult time recently in many ways, but I send all members of the AGW my Very Best Wishes  for a Happy, Healthy and Successful year in 2023, and thank you for your continued friendship.

Happy New Year

Could you please convey my thanks for an excellent hamper from the AGW and put together by Peter Higgs. A pleasure receiving it and still a surprise to be old enough. Happy New Year to all.

Best, as ever,  Liz

ALLAN HERON

I would just like to say thank you so much for my lovely gift over Christmas. It was the highight of the festive season when my wife Elizabeth brough it to me.

To make you aware, at the age of 94 I need a wee bit of looking after these days. I am now residing in the Boclair Care Home in Bearsden near my home. I had a bit of a rough time of it last year with long spells in hospital but touch wood I’m in decent shape for a man of my years and they look after me pretty well here.

My son Lindsay is sending this on my behalf as I don’t have regular access to email.

Thanks again and every success to the Assoc this year

Kind regards

Allan

JOAN WILSON

Joan Wilson was delighted with her hamper – she has just asked me for your email address so she can write to you – and she also asked if it might be possible for me to arrange for you to send her an AGW booklet so she can use it to catch-up with old friends etc. Her address is: Flat 32, Trees, 2-4 Broadlands Road, London N6 4AN.

Trust you are keeping well and thanks in anticipation.

All the best

Mitchell (Platts)

JOHN BOWLES

Many thanks for your kind thought in sending me a hamper.
It will be much enjoyed !
Happy New Year.
Best wishes to all,

John

TONY GARNETT

Very many thanks for the lovely Christmas hamper which arrived today. It is very much appreciated by an octogenarian who is housebound these days! It is a wonderful selection of things I enjoy. I am still able to provide East Anglian Daily Times with a supply of golf news and results but wonder how long printed provincial papers will survive.  I have regular visits from Suffolk players, both amateur and professional. It’s nice to keep in touch.  I also enjoy the competition run so well by Mark Garrod. I wish all members of AGW a very happy Christmas and the best of good fortune in 2023.
