GASTON BARRAS PASSES AWAY

Swiss golf is in mourning.
Gaston Barras, the one nicknamed “Mr. Golf”, died of a short illness this Sunday, March 7, 2021, a few months before his 90th birthday.

A sad note to lead on with the passing of Gaston Barras.

Mr. Barras was a good friend to so many members of the AGW and there would always be an outstretched hand in attending his European Masters at Crans-Montana or any tournament he would be in attendance.

AGW member Philippe Hermann has provided a wonderful tribute to Mr. Barras.

AGW GOLF – 2021 Michael Williams Hogget and R & A Salver

Understandably, the R & A advises the Media Facilitation Day for Tuesday, 20th April, 2021 will not go ahead at Royal St. George’s but instead will be a Zoom conference.

Given this news and in line with England Golf guidelines in relation to minimize the need for travel, along with clubhouses in England not reopening for catering to mid-May (in line with the rule of six), the AGW has also reluctantly been forced to postpone our booking with Royal Cinque Ports for Monday, 19th April.

Be assured our Golf Captain Peter Dixon is working on alternatives to ensure these two events will be lost on the schedule this year.

And as it stands the two events held last year, namely the inaugural Renton Laidlaw Quaich and the Ron Moseley Memorial trophy, will form part of a 2020/21 ETIQUS AGW of the Year honours.

SEVE – 10th ANNIVERSARY OF HIS PASSING

To mark the 10th anniversary of the passing of Seve Ballesteros on May 7th, an invitation is extended to all members and our AGW friends to contribute a memory of Seve.

A number of members did focus on Seve as part of last year’s highly-successful AGW memories.

This invitation is purely Seve memories.

If you could keep them please to around 500-words and they will be posted to the AGW website in order of receipt.

If you could get them to the Secretary by 7th May that would be good.

Also, if anyone has personal photographs with Seve in their collection could you also please consider sharing a copy of the photograph/s with the AGW?

2021 AGW HANDBOOKS AND DIARIES

With a big THANK YOU to Robin Barwick, members should have received AGW handbooks and diaries.

If not, I have a few spare copies (Not Robin) so drop me an email and I will post what you require.
