While the professionals were preparing for the Betfred British Masters at the Belfry on the Tuesday of last week, the real action was taking place on the adjacent PGA National course (Peter Dixon writes). Here, eight of the AGW’s finest (no hyperbole needed!) were to be found competing for the Michael Williams Hogget.
It is not known if the assembled stars of the European tour (it is still the European Tour, isn’t it?) had taken any inspiration from what was unfolding close by, but it’s tempting to think that Thorbjorn Olesen must have done. How else to explain an eagle-birdie finish to his final round over The Brabazon course on Sunday?
Equally impressive was Colin Harding’s defence of the title he won so convincingly at Walton Heath last year. Colin had the pleasure of playing with Roddy Williams, a most welcome guest, who was on hand to present the trophy that is named in his father’s honour.
In the event, the battle for honours came down to two players. The ever-consistent Rob Perkins came in with 35 points – the same score he managed at St Andrews a few weeks earlier – but was pipped at the post by Colin, whose excellent 36 points was made up of an outward half of 19 and an inward half of 17, which was no mean feat on a long and tough course.
It was also good to meet the Yorkshire Post’s Chris Stratford, one of our newest members, who was playing in his first AGW event. Third place, on 31 points, went to our esteemed (many would say smug) golf captain, while Patricia Davies and Andy Waple shared joint fourth on 27 points.
* Special thank you to Gail Aldridge, Marketing Director at The Belfry for hosting the AGW
**Apologies to anyone who tried to contact me but didn’t receive an answer. It seems that the link attached to Bernie’s emails/newsletters does not work. If you wish to contact me, please do it directly. If you don’t hear back in a reasonable time, feel free to phone me. I will always try to acknowledge any emails I receive.
*** Also, just to advise interest is strong to tee-up at Crail (10 mins to the east of St. Andrews) on the afternoon of July 13th, and on the eve of the 150th Open, so if you are looking to play you best advise me asap
