Tumb Nail sizeAGW 80th Anniversary (1938-2018)

Dear AGW members,

There is a number of items of interest to come to notice since my recent Bulletin and rather than wait to a June bulletin I am sending out a Part 2 to last week’s May bulletin.

JOCK MACVICAR –  Elected new President of AGW

The AGW Chairman and executive is very delighted to announce Jock MacVicar has agreed to become the next President of the AGW.

Goran Zachrisson, who created AGW history in accepting the role in 2015, will step down after a superb contribution as President at this year’s Annual General Meeting of the AGW at Carnoustie.

Jock is naturally delighted and also very proud to accept the role in a year the AGW celebrates its 80th anniversary.

Jock MacVicar and Martin Dempster.

Jock MacVicar and Martin Dempster – the AGWs next President and Chairman.

Jock, who joined the AGW in 1965, also celebrated his 81st birthday late last month and I know all AGW members will join me in extending our congratulations to Jock who will become the 13th President of the AGW.

Confirmation of Jock’s appointment comes on top of the enormous outpouring of congratulations and support being afforded fellow Scot Martin Dempster (via social media) following news of his appointment early in 2019 as the next AGW Chairman.

Among those offering congratulations to Martin is Colin Montgomerie and 2019 Solheim Cup Captain, Catriona Matthew.

FIRST PHOTO – AGW’s R & A Salver Champion

Fergus Bisset was pretty chuffed when he received word he’d won a maiden AGW golf trophy in capturing the 2018 R & A Salver at Carnoustie.

Fergus, who works for Golf Monthly, had to leave early for another engagement but not thinking for a moment his 29 Stableford points over the 2018 Open Championship host venue would be good enough to win the day in a count-back over Alex Miceli.

As mentioned, it was Fergus’ first AGW victory and congratulations from all those who teed-up at Carnoustie.

RYDER CUP ACCOMMODATION – Message from Ryder Cup Europe.

In the earlier May bulletin there was a note posted from one of our French-based members extending assistance to members in relation to accommodation in an around Versailles for this year’s Ryder Cup.

Firstly, this information was in no way intended to be dismissive of the work of the European Tour collaborating with the AGW and GWAA in presenting official media hotel options, and that many AGW members have chosen.

The main rationale for the choosing the four media hotels was their proximity to Le Golf National, combined with affordability, to ensure journey times to and from the course are as short as possible for media working long days at the Ryder Cup. This was based on feedback supplied by the AGW, and other media who attended Gleneagles, which we feel we have adhered to.

As such, the AGW recommends media attending the Ryder Cup and are yet to book accommodation use the dedicated hotels which will have excellent transport links to and from the Le National course.

Good golfing,

Bernie McGuire,

AGW Secretary.
