The gods were smiling on us this week when they provided perfect weather for the AGW’s first outing of the year at Royal Mid Surrey for the 28th September, 2020 hosting of the AGWs Ron Moseley Memorial Trophy reports AGW Golf Captain, Peter Dixon.

But while there was sunshine, warmth and barely a breath of wind for the staging of the Ron Moseley Memorial Trophy on Monday, there was nothing easy about a J H Taylor course that tested all the players to the limit.

The club had kindly offered us five tee times, playing as two balls, and we had a full turnout of players, together with Tom Benbow of the Ladies European Tour, who also happens to be the present club champion at RMS.

Most players struggled on greens which were frighteningly fast and that had pins placed in the most teasing of locations. Everyone came in with tales of woe, three-putt greens and more, and it would be fair to say the difficulty was reflected in the scoring (and surely had absolutely nothing to do with golfing ineptitude!).

In the end, well-deserved victory went to Iain Carter, whose 30 points bettered Bill Elliott, in second place, by three. After four holes, and with only four points on his card, our eventual champion ventured to suggest he had no chance of posting a winning score. He had the benefit of playing with Tom Benbow, however, who was able to reassure him that nobody would be burning up the course on this particular day. How true his words proved to be.

Special thanks go to David Facey, last year’s winner, who drove all the way from the north-west to make sure we had a “brilliantly polished trophy” (his words) to present to the champion – at a socially-distanced arm’s length (see photo).

Thanks, must also go to John Collard, a great friend of the AGW, who kindly arranged our day with the club. Royal Mid Surrey could not have been more welcoming. They looked after us royally and provided a safe environment in which to play and to socialise in our groups of six or less. That old friends were able to sit on the terrace overlooking the 18 th green and to catch up on each other’s news made it the best of days. Here’s to many more.
