Michael Williams Hogget, Royal Portrush – July 5th, 2017

David Facey ended a recent run of Emerald Isle born AGW member victories storming his way to an eight-point victory in the Michael Williams Hogget at Royal Portrush.

It was the third year in succession the Michael Williams Hogget, and first staged in 1998, has been held on the Irish mainland.

A dozen teed off on the 2019 Open Championship host venue including three very welcome guests in Stephanie Wie, John O’Sullivan and Damon Hack.

Philip Quinn, and one of our newer members, also made his “pro” debut in the AGW ranks.

Dave had been a close runner up in 2015 at Kilkeel GC when the Irish Open was held at Royal Country Down but he made sure of a first taste of AGW success with emphatic 35 points and playing off a handicap of 17.

He parred the first and last holes and in between capped his round with a birdie at the new par five, seventh hole but he then proceeded to lose two balls off the eighth tee, and a further two balls in his round.

And remarkably, included in Dave’s round was three holes where he did not score so congratulations to a worthy new AGW champion.

Alistair Tait moves from second and into a 15-point lead in the ETIQUS AGW Golfer of the Year finishing joint second with Greg Allen and Derek Lawrenson.

Alistair capped his round with a super up-and-down four-point birdie from a particularly nasty lie in a bunker at 11 while Derek birdied the new eighth hole and then ended on a great note with a birdie at the last.

Greg delighted in holing a brilliant chip shot for par on nine and then secured a share of second on the back of two closing pars.

Wilma Erksine, and legendary Secretary at Royal Portrush, attended the Irish Open and delighted in handing Dave the trophy and just hours after tournament host, Rory McIlroy left Portstewart without little to show for his two round efforts.
