AGW Chairman Martin Dempster with the spoils of his 2023 R & A Salver victory at Royal Liverpool (19th April)

Martin Dempster is clearly determined to end his term as AGW chairman on a high note, after claiming his first Golf Writers’ trophy success in 14 years.

Martin, who will step down from the AGW hot seat in July, racked up an impressive 34 points in windy conditions at Royal Liverpool to capture the much-prized R&A Salver.

And with our chairman hosting the second event on the Road of Hoylake – the Renton Laidlaw Quaich – at his home course of Aberdour on May 1, he will be a hot favourite to shrug off a two shot handicap cut and make local knowledge count.

No pressure, Martin….

The chairman held off the debut-making Michael Weston by one shot, with Dan Murphy a further shot adrift and Dick Turner completing a quartet of players who topped the thirty point mark.

There are still spots available for Aberdour – and the sight of Dempster in full flow is an added attraction members will surely find hard to resist.
