The stunning-looking Renton Laidlaw Quaich

The inaugural staging of the new Renton Laidlaw Quaich took place at Kingsbarns, where six members were hosted by Alan Hogg at the fabulous Fife venue.

While the clubhouse is currently closed, Alan was on the first tee to greet us and also hand out a lovely leather card holder to mark this year being the course’s 20th anniversary.

We are indebted to Alan for providing us with courtesy of the course and also for arranging for hot food and refreshments to be served at the excellent halfway house before starting and also at the turn.

When I stopped off at Drumoig en route to pick up the trophy, the rain was hammering down as I sheltered under an umbrella and enjoyed a short chat with both Renton and his sister, Jennifer.

However, it was dry by the time we teed off and, as had been forecast, it turned into a perfect day for links golf, with a nice breeze blowing in off the North Sea.

Gordon Bannerman, with 29 points playing off 23, set the clubhouse target from the first group, but that effort was surpassed in the second group by 21-handicapper Dave Edwards.

Despite starting and finishing with blobs, Dave scored 33 points, an effort that included net eagles at both the par-4 sixth and par-5 12th.

The former Press & Journal man also picked up two points at the par-4 17th when his putt from 60 feet cannoned off Euan McLean’s marker and disappeared into the hole.

Dave was delighted with his victory over a course that was in fantastic condition and, as always, left everyone feeling that they’d had a fun few hours out on the links. We may have been small in numbers, but that didn’t really matter when you saw just how much the six people in attendance enjoyed their day.

Thanks to our secretary, Bernie McGuire, for arranging the event and, of course, to Renton for kindly donating a lovely quaich bearing his name.

Renton, incidentally, was in good fettle, even though he is in a bit of discomfort at the moment following his recent fall. As always, he is being well looked after by the aforementioned Jennifer.
