AGW Chairman Martin Dempster with Jeremy Chapman on the occasion in affording Jeremy Life Membership of the AGW

MESSAGE FROM PATRICIA DAVIES

I’m very sorry that I can’t make it to Wentworth to congratulate Jeremy on his well-deserved life membership of the AGW and catch up with him and Christa.  They’re always great company and I inevitably come away from our meetings better informed and sometimes wiser.  My love and best wishes to them and their family.

One of my regrets is that I never paid enough attention to Jeremy’s betting expertise and persisted in putting on the daftest, most random bets known to punterdom – talk about a bookies’ friend…. One gripe of very longstanding, though:  the one time I did win money at The Open, on Jose Maria Olazabal at Muirfield (disgruntled punters have very long memories), I had to leave early and my bookie (Jeremy) misguidedly gave my winnings to Dai, no doubt thinking that a decent husband would press the money (a massive 30 quid as I recall) into his wife’s hands at the earliest possible opportunity….This wife is still waiting…..Though I suppose you could argue that I probably recouped the money from Dai’s estate….Not quite the same, especially for somebody like me, who won once in a blue moon, if that often.

As for Jeremy’s golf – it was always more than adequate and would have been vastly better if he hadn’t been so relentlessly downbeat, expecting the worst and reluctant to accept anything better even when it happened before his very eyes!!!!!  Happy days!

Congratulations Jeremy and Christa.  Have a lovely day, Patricia xo💚

EMAILS FROM JERERMY TO MARTIN AND RETURN

Dear Martin,

So much of great moment has happened since you and the AGW honoured me so royally at Wentworth that it’s hard to credit that it was only yesterday.

Thank you so very much for the kind words and, of course, the wonderfully inscribed memento of a special occasion. It is something I will always treasure, as I do the days spent on tour with my AGW brethren all those years ago. Those are the memories I have to carry me through my ninth decade or whatever time I have left. Be assured it will forever have a prominent place on my mantelpiece and in my heart.

Please pass on my thanks too to Bernie for all the behind-the-scenes work he did to set up yesterday’s little ceremony which Christa and I so very much enjoyed. It was lovely to meet old friends and make a new one, Matt Cooper of SportingLife.com, a fellow Stephen Sondheim fan. We could have talked all day!

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy

Thanks for your email and apologies for the delay in getting back to you. It has, indeed, been a strange 48 hours since you were here in the Media Centre.

It was so nice to see both you and Christa on Thursday and it was a real honour for me to make the presentation on behalf of the AGW. I am so pleased to hear what receiving Honorary Life Membership of our great association means to you and will be sharing your comments with our members via Bernie in the next newsletter.

I have already mentioned to Matt Cooper, a lovely bloke, that you enjoyed meeting him.

Look after yourself, my good friend, and please let Christa know that it was lovely to meet her, though I am sure we had met in the past.

Regards

Martin
