Notice 2021 AGW Annual General Meeting

Notice is hereby given of the 2021 Annual General Meeting to take place at TBA time am on Wednesday 15th July, 2021 in the media centre at the 149th Open Championship at Royal St. George’s.

Of course, it will be a first AGM in two years following the cancellation of last year’s Open.

While there will be a restricted media attendance at The Open, the AGW constitution does state that we do need eight members to form a quorum so hopefully we should be able to satisfy that requirement.

If any member knows he will not be present at the meeting, then please advise the Secretary.

And if an absent member wishes a matter to be raised at the AGM, also please email the Secretary.

Of course, only life and full members may attend or contribute to the AGM.

Presentation to Lee Westwood – 2020 AGW Golfer of the Year

Unfortunately, with the AGWs annual dinner cancelled it means losing the opportunity for both Shane Lowry, as winner of the 2019 AGW Golfer of the Year, and our 2020 winner, Lee Westwood to be honoured in the presence of members, supporters and guests.

There will, however, be an official handover to Lee of the trophy during the Open Championship at Royal St. George’s and that will take place via a small reception either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Members will be kept advised.

AGW Annual Dinner

If there is some bright news to come from having to cancel the 2021 AGW annual dinner it is each of our financial sponsors and others supporters indicated, and following being formally advised of the cancellation, that they remain fully supportive going forward to 2022.

So, that is great news as we look forward to be a strong part of the 150th Open Championship celebrations next year at St. Andrews.

Colin Harding Captures Second Michael Williams Hogget

Congratulations to Colin Harding in capturing the Michael Williams Hogget.

It is Colin’s second Michael Williams Hogget success and a fourth AGW triumph covering a span of 25-years.

There was a strong turn-out to tee-up on the New Course at Walton Heath.

AGW Golf Captain Peter Dixon has put together a report of the outing and members can read the report, note all the scores and view more photographs by clicking on the following AGW website link:-

https://www.agwgolf.org/colin-harding-wins-michael-williams-hogget-at-walton-heath/

One of those who teed-up at Walton Heath was Jeremy Chapman, who has not been in the best of health for a long time now.

It speaks volumes, and given Jeremy’s poor health, that he even considered being present let alone teeing-up and thanks to his wonderful wife, Christa he did.

And with Christa driving the motorised cart, Jeremy played in the same group as Colin Harding and bravely played all 18 holes.

Jeremey, who turns 80 in November, wrote to our Golf Captain and myself expressing how much it meant to him to join those at Walton Heath.

Jeremy’s email, and with his permission, is hereunder.

Hi, Peter

Just to thank you, Gordon (Simpson) and of course my old pal Stuart Christie (who leaves Walton Heath for pastures new next month) for yesterday’s wonderful outing and the free buggy. What a treat!

I knew I was punching above my weight when signing up for Walton Heath as there are a number of holes, six at least, where, even with my very best drive, I no longer have the strength to carry the heather. And, knowing that, one tries TOO hard and the wheels come off big-time.

I was SO bad that Christa wanted me to quit, yet she knows from caring for me so wonderfully since my life-changing cancer of 2009 and from five years of the Nil By Mouth radiation by-product I have no quit in me.

In retrospect, I should have played off the red tees and not worried about the competition. I would have enjoyed it more with the carries not such a problem and so would my extremely patient playing partners.

If I in any way spoilt the day for Adrian and Andy after their long journeys to be there, I am truly sorry. If you are in contact with them, please apologise on my behalf. I am too ashamed to do so myself.

At least I know Colin Harding enjoyed my company as I marked the winner’s card. Even though he had a good score going, I couldn’t have asked for more help from a playing companion. He is the best ball-finder I’ve ever played with! I never lost one.

Selfishly, I wanted one last game at my favourite club in the world. It was on the New that I recorded my lowest competitive round, a 75 (off 12 handicap) in a 1977 Hole In One Golf Society competition and where in 1979 and 1987 I won two of my three Sir Emsley Carr Match Play Championships, the premier event on the PGS calendar.

I have it written in my will that my ashes are to be scattered there.

Don’t know when I’ll see you all again as am not sure if you have any games planned in the south but if Royal Mid Surrey are having us again, I am up for that. No long carries there …

All the best

Jeremy

Good quiz for you … you certainly know Walton-on-Hill and Walton-on-Thames, probably Walton in Liverpool too as Goodison Park is there and is the birthplace of Paul McCartney. But how many towns and villages in England have Walton in their name?

If anyone wishes to contact Jeremy, and I hope there may be a few, you can do so at email:  <email hidden; JavaScript is required>

Adrian Milledge Leads 2020/21 Race to Royal Liverpool

A third at last year’s Ron Moseley Trophy and now a share of fourth at the Michael Williams Hogget has seen Adrian Milledge move three shots clear in the 2020/21 AGW ETIQUS – Race to Royal Liverpool – AGW Golfer of the Year.

Dave Edwards is in second place and with Dave looking to make the most of his defence on June 22nd of the Renton Laidlaw Quaich at Dumbarnie Links.

2021 Renton Laidlaw Quaich – Dumbarnie Links – June 22nd

I type this reminder of the AGWs next golf meeting on a day after there was three players, including 1999 Open Champion, Paul Lawrie, sharing a new course record 63 while one player had an ace on the 6th hole during the final round of a Scottish PGA event on the stunning Dumbarnie Links in Scotland. Check out Paul’s scorecard particular his closing five holes

Dave Edwards is in second place and with Dave looking to make the most of his defence on June 22nd of the Renton Laidlaw Quaich at Dumbarnie Links.

With thanks to Michele Mair at IMG Golf, the AGW has the opportunity to tackle this one-year old course when we tee-up in the second hosting of the Renton Laidlaw Quaich on Tuesday, 22nd June.

As mentioned, Dave Edwards is defending champ so beware as it will be a lot sharper Scot and making a much shorter drive than the trek down to Walton Heath and back north when he tees-up in ‘The Kingdom’.

The outing is part of a Women’s Scottish Open promotion and with a press conference beforehand followed by a lunch and then golf

Names of those competing at Dumbarnie Links are with Michele however if a member is wishing to play advise the Secretary ASAP

2021 R & A Salver – Wednesday 14th, July – Royal Cinque Ports

Good news with Royal Cinque Ports generously affording the AGW tee times to allow the hosting of the R & A Salver during the week of the Open.

Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club

Details of the golf outing are:

Tee times – 4.50pm & 5pm on Wednesday evening July 14th ahead of The Open.

Given the 2020 R & A Salver was cancelled due also to the cancellation of The Open, here is the chance now to still tee-up at Royal Cinque Ports and located just under 3 miles from Royal St. George’s.

The outing is open to all members whether or not you are accredited for The Open and with the late tee times to assist those who are working at The Open.

However, if there is enough non-accredited Open media wishing to play, and also may be looking to play earlier in the day, than please advise AGW Golf Captain Peter Dixon at email:  email hidden; JavaScript is required

As well, this booking presents our overseas members, who will be attending The Open, the chance to compete for one of the AGW trophies.

Bookings are on a ‘first come, first served’ basis so advise Peter asap.

And …

Best wishes to our former chairman, Bill Elliot who was forced to skip the AGW Mihgolf outing as he recovers from a knee operation

Also, a speedy recovery to Gordon Simpson who also could not tee-up at Walton Heath but was on hand.

We extend our very best wishes to Wendy Higgs, the wife of our Treasurer, Peter Higgs, in also getting back to full health.

And please note in your AGW handbook a new email address for Gordon Richardson – email hidden; JavaScript is required">email hidden; JavaScript is required

Cheers to everyone and look forward to seeing at The Open.

Bernie,

Secretary.
