AGW Chairman, Martin Dempster reports ……

Malcolm Campbell proved a fitting winner of the Renton Laidlaw Quaich, which was staged as part of a media day for the Trust Golf Scottish Women’s Open at Dumbarnie Links in Fife.

Malcolm, who discovered the stunning links land close to his home in Lower Largo and hit the official opening tee shot in May last year on the Clive-Clark designed course, amassed 38 points on a glorious summer day in the Kingdom.

Playing off 11 and picking up points at every hole, Malcolm scored 17 points going out before covering the tougher back nine in 21 points, including a net eagle-2 at the penultimate hole.

He won by a shot from Brian McLaughlin, who amassed 22 points going out before adding 15 points on the inward journey.

Martin Dempster, Nick Rodger and Rob Perkins all finished with 35 points, three better than defending champion Dave Edwards.

Malcolm’s victory came 35 years after he won the same event when the President’s Putter was the prize.

“It was great to be able to hold the second staging of the Renton Laidlaw Quaich as part of an excellent Trust Golf Scottish Women’s Open Media Day,” said AGW chairman Dempster.

“As was the case at a dinner held in Hams Hame in St Andrews the previous evening, our hosts rolled out the red carpet for members from the minute we arrived at Dumbarnie Links around 10am right through until we departed in the early evening.

“David Scott, the general manager, and his team provided one of the warmest welcomes I can recall in my time playing in AGW events and, as well as letting them know that on the day, I have emphasised the fact in a subsequent email.

“As I did in passing on our thanks to the IMG team, led by our great friend, Michele Mair, and also including Ross Hallett and Harry Owen.

“I know that he was disappointed that he couldn’t make the trip from France, but I would also like to extend thanks to our secretary, Bernie McGuire, for liaising with Michele in the weeks leading up to this event.

“Congratulations to Malcolm and I know it will be a proud week for both him and Clive Clark when the world’s top players compete at Dumbarnie Links in August in the Trust Golf Scottish Women’s Open.”
