Jeremy Chapman wins a second Michael Williams Hogget & lifts his seventh AGW trophy

(NB – The 2025 Michael Williams Hogget was contested on 17th September, 2024 as the opening event of the 2025 AGW Golf – ETIQUS Race to Royal Liverpool season. It will be among five events to be contested ahead of crowning our 2025 champion)

Ordinarily Jeremy Chapman and Manchester City Football Club have little in common. Not so in the week of the AGW’s final golf event of the year at West Byfleet. A day after the hearing into Manchester City’s 115 charges for alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules began, Jeremy had good cause to celebrate the number.

It was the total tally of strokes he took to negotiate the course at West Byfleet Golf Club and win the 2025 Michael Williams Hogget that was staged in September 2024 as the opening event of the ETIQUS 2025 Race to Hoylake – AGW Golfer of the Year season.

The win is Jeremy’s second Michael Williams Hogget triumph after his first in 2001 while his tally of AGW wins numbers is now seven and this win coming close to 40-years since his maiden AGW golfing triumph in 1984. Jeremy’s other AGW wins see below,

Playing off a handicap of 45, he returned a nett score of 70 to amass 37 Stableford points to finish three clear of West Byfleet member Colin Harding and five ahead of Peter Dixon.

“It’s surely the highest winning score in AGW history,” he commented afterwards. “And to win when I thought my winning days were long over was a bonus I dreamed about but could never see happening.”

Jeremy was similarly effusive about the venue and occasion. “What a pleasure it was to play in such a lovely autumn setting, and so close to home,” he added.

“There was a wonderful friendliness about the club and amazing generosity. A big vote of thanks goes to Colin Harding too (who laid the foundations for the fixture). It was a splendid occasion all round seeing old friends and new.”

Colin has been a member of West Byfleet for more than 40 years and it’s easy to see why. The course is challenging, fair and picturesque while the ambience in the clubhouse exuded friendliness and bonhomie, not least from Kevin Mullen, the club’s general secretary.

In addition to his helpfulness and hospitality, Kevin arranged for us to receive courtesy on the course and complimentary pre and post golf refreshments.

All of which bodes well for next year when the AGW will host the annual fixture with the Golf Foundation at the venue in early May.

Meanwhile, many thanks to the members who played at West Byfleet and those who supported the other events during the year.

Scores: 37 Jeremy Chapman; 34 Colin Harding; 32 Peter Dixon; 31 Rob Perkins; 28 Dave Edwards; 24 Adrian Milledge; 23 David Facey; 22 Roderick Easdale; 21 Bill Elliott.
