It was a packed Carnoustie interview room on Friday of the 147th Open not for Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy but when Tony Stenson’s many friends gathered to congratulate a retiring ‘Stengun’ on a marvellous journalist career.

Dave Facey spoke of his 22-year friendship with Tony and remarking Tony fell into the category of either ‘life-long friend, life-long colleague or life-long mate’ to which Tony laughingly responded: “I’ve fallen into a lot of things in my career”.

Dave singled out one of Tony’s finest moments when Angel Cabrera won his second Major Championship (2009 Masters) and with Tony asking of Dave: “I don’t understand how that man has never got a mention in the Ryder Cup team?”

Dave then pointed out Cabrera was from Argentina and prompted Tony to ask: “Well, he might have been born in the Falklands!” That revelation generated more laughter.

A presentation of an exclusive Star Sunday souvenir back page report on Tony ‘Tartan’ McStenson’s part in Scotland’s stunning Home Internationals triumph in Turkey was then made to Tony.
