With the season’s highest score, Dick Turner was a worthy and deserving winner over the magnificent terrain of Delamere Forest. Dick’s incredible 44-point total beat Peter Dixon by three points and wiped the smile off the face of his nearest challenger.
To Dixon’s eternal shame, and no doubt the annoyance of the golfing gods, he had been overheard suggesting that Bernie McGuire present him with the trophy. “I can’t present it to myself,” Dixon said.
He needn’t have worried. Still out on the course, Turner was playing one of the rounds of his life and putting beautifully. The only thing left to do was collect the trophy from none other than the runner-up. Were Dixon’s teeth gritted by any chance? Almost certainly.
“Well done, Dick,” he said.
“Thank you. And bad luck,” Dick replied.
It was an almost perfect end to the perfect day.
