AGW NEWSLETTER – FEBRUARY 2024

Greetings to AGM members and our friends.  Trust everyone had an enjoyable Christmas/New Year season.

Here is the first of the New Year AGW newsletters and as previously mentioned, I’m always looking to hear from the members with any news/photographs from a special occasion in your life and maybe you’d like to share with your fellow members.

AGW Christmas Hampers – Thank You’s

Once again, it has been great to read the many thank you notes from those members, and partners/family of our department members their joy in receiving an annual AGW Christmas hamper.

It is just a small AGW token to advise the Association is thinking of them but the joy it brings does make the annual exercise all worthwhile.

AGW Committee Vacancies

There are presently a few vacancies on the AGW committee and I wondered if there is any member who would like to join the committee, perhaps you could drop me a line.

The committee meets a few times a year (First 2024 meeting next Tuesday via Zoom) to discuss AGW matters and also represents the Association at meetings with those bodies such as the DP World Tour, R & A and PGA Tour.

Also, there is no minimum requirement as to how many years you remain on the committee.

So, look forward to hearing from members and particularly our female colleagues.

AGW Member News

Condolences

Very sad news in learning of the passing of Liz Kahn’s husband, David and with the Association expressing our condolences to Liz and family.

As well, the AGW extended condolences to members Oskar and Marcus Brunnthaler following the extreme sadness in losing both wife and mother.

Our thoughts also with Scott Crockett whose mother passed away just prior to Christmas after being ill the past few years.

Members will also recall Paddy Mearing passed away on December 5th, 2023 and just a week shy of his 96th birthday.

I received a handful of tributes to Paddy and you can read those by clicking on:

If there any member who knew Paddy and cares to add a tribute, please contact me.

Members may also be aware the Daily Mail tennis correspondent Mike Dickson, collapsed and died after a day’s work at the Australian Open. He was aged 59.

Mike’s two main sports were tennis and cricket, and he would attend The Open every year as part of the Mail’s golf team.

The AGW reached out to Mike’s family with a tribute.

Wishing Them Well

AGW Chairman – Phil Reid

Our chairman Phil Reid is in good spirits as he undergoes rehabilitation following hip replacement surgery.

Phil is hoping all goes well so he’ll be able to travel to the Masters.

John Whitbred

I received a nice note from John Whitbred that I am sure John will not mind me sharing with the members:

I must firstly apologise for the long delay in writing to you, but I had not been very well in the weeks leading up to and just beyond Christmas.

Anyway, feeling better now and so want to send belated thanks for the lovely Christmas hamper which has been such a true morale booster – yet another reminder of how tremendous the AGW is and how proud I am to be a member, even a less than active one.

I believe Peter Higgs has been responsible for sending out these welcome delights and I trust you will pass on my sincere appreciation of his efforts

Meanwhile all the best to all AGW members for a successful and happy 2024.

Fond regards

John Whitbread

Mike Blair

If you read the Christmas hamper ‘Thank you’s’ you will have noticed Mike Blair had been in hospital for some time in December, so our best wishes to Mike, who is hopefully back home and recovering.

You can reach Mike via email: email hidden; JavaScript is required

Dermot Gilleece

Also, Dermot was in hospital over the early New Year being treated for a serious bout of pneumonia.

Wishing our recently-retired AGW member is also back to full health.

KEITH PELLEY SEND OFF

AGW members will be aware European Tour CEO Keith Pelley is officially stepping down from his current role on 1st April, 2024.

Keith has been a good friend to the AGW since that day late in May, 2015 when he entered the media centre at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and walked up to every desk in personally introducing himself.

Given the timing of his departure it will not be possible to arrange anything at Wentworth, so a sendoff and presentation will be held for Keith during next month’s Players Championship in Florida.
